Principals often lead IEP or multidisciplinary team meetings and meet with parents about students’ progress on goals and objectives-yet most principals do not have training in the basic provisions of special education law or Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. This program, designed specifically for principals and assistant principals, gives a concise overview of the basics of special education law. You’ll find out the most common causes of special education litigation and how you can work throughout the school year to avoid or mitigate them. You will take away tips and plans to help your staff provide appropriate services to students with disabilities while also reducing the chance of litigation. This presentation is based on A Principal’s Guide to Special Education, Third Edition.

After viewing this program, you will be able to:

  • Discuss basic provisions of IDEA, 504, FERPA, ADA
  • Take steps to avoid the most common causes of litigation related to special education
  • Implement the basic framework for a litigation-free school by planning throughout the school year
  • Identify and train backups for critical positions and functions.
